Background of the study
Stress patterns in speech, which involve the emphasis placed on syllables and words, play a crucial role in the clarity and persuasiveness of spoken language. In Nigerian radio news broadcasts, particularly those in Hausa, stress patterns are pivotal for ensuring that messages are communicated effectively and understood by a diverse audience. This study examines how variations in stress affect listener comprehension in Hausa broadcasts. It analyzes recordings from news segments to identify patterns of stress and their correlation with audience understanding. Such phonetic features are influenced by factors like regional dialects and broadcasting styles, impacting both the delivery and reception of news (Chukwu, 2023). By integrating acoustic analysis with listener surveys, the research aims to determine whether deviations from standard stress patterns contribute to misinterpretation or enhanced engagement. The findings will offer insights into optimal speech delivery for broadcasters, ensuring that linguistic nuances are maintained without compromising clarity (Ibrahim, 2024; Suleiman, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Although stress patterns are known to influence comprehension, there is limited empirical research on their specific effects in Hausa radio news broadcasts. Variability in stress may lead to ambiguous messaging or listener confusion, impacting the overall efficacy of news delivery (Chukwu, 2023). The lack of systematic analysis on how stress patterns affect comprehension hampers the development of broadcasting standards that promote clear communication. This study addresses this gap by investigating the relationship between stress patterns and listener understanding, with the goal of informing broadcasting practices that enhance clarity and retention of news content (Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is confined to analyzing stress patterns in Hausa radio news broadcasts and does not consider other languages or broadcast types.
